David Pascoe is the proprietor of Nawakum Press in Santa Rosa, California. He is a recipient of the Carl Hertzog Award of Excellence in Book Design. He publishes handcrafted, fine press and artists’ books in exciting, limited editions, celebrating compelling literature with original, world-class artwork. While incorporating the very best from the fine press tradition, Nawakum is also interested in stretching the boundaries of the modern day book. The Press both originates and manages its own concepts, while also collaborating with authors, artists and a myriad of talented craftspeople. All books are letterpress printed and artisan bound with distinctive, archival materials.
The bookmaking community is blessed with an outstanding array of talented letterpress printers, hand bookbinders, papermakers, typographers, and gifted artists. The Press draws from this remarkable collection of talent to help execute its goal of publishing significant, collectable editions of the highest quality. It seeks to support those accomplished book artisans at work in the field today, for in their own special way they are also some of the stories we wish to tell.
Nawakum Press takes its name from the Native American word nawakum, originating in the Pacific Northwest and meaning, "gently flowing water." The Press draws inspiration from literature and art suffused with the fluid, natural rhythms of our inner and outer landscapes. It strives to share these realms in a clear and refreshing manner, and with reverence.
The Press wishes to thank those collectors and institutions whose acquisitions of its work have helped support its publishing goals. Following is a partial list of institutions »
